Key Decisions Podcast with Ollie & Keith
Renting, Buying and Knowing
Where to Start You might know what a mortgage is, but would you know where to start if you wanted to buy a home?
Who do you speak to first? What are you saving towards? And why does a property go “sale agreed” before it is actually sold?
For the opening episode of Season 2 of Key Decisions, we invited Shannon Redmond to put her questions to Ollie and Keith.
Usually helping to keep things running behind the scenes, Shannon joined us on the other side of the microphone with a renter’s perspective and a request for explanations in the plainest English possible.
As it turned out, there was plenty to talk about. The pressure to have it all figured out Having recently moved into a rented apartment,
Shannon spoke honestly about enjoying her own space while already being asked when she would start looking for a mortgage. It is a familiar conversation. You reach one milestone and, before you have had a chance to enjoy it, somebody is asking about the next one. Shannon also raised the phrase many renters are tired of hearing: “dead money”. For someone who is happy in their home, values their independence and is still figuring out what they want, that description can feel dismissive.
Ollie shared her own experience of renting a home she loves. The conversation was a reminder that people have different priorities, and that deciding where and how to live is personal.
Buying a home is a significant commitment, and somebody else’s timetable does not have to become yours. Making sense of the basics
When the conversation turned to buying, Shannon asked the questions that can easily get lost when people working in property assume everyone knows the terminology. We talked about the first conversations around mortgage preparation, the difference between saving towards a deposit and understanding your wider budget, and the value of getting individual advice before you begin searching seriously.
There were questions about house prices too. How do you begin to judge whether an asking price makes sense? What is the Property Price Register? And why might two apparently similar houses be priced differently?
The discussion also covered BERs, condition and the work a buyer might be taking on. Shannon’s questions kept bringing us back to what those details actually mean for someone considering a home.
And then there was the gap between “sale agreed” and getting the keys: why solicitors are involved, what needs to be checked and why accepting an offer is only part of the journey.
Exactly why we started Key Decisions This episode captured the reason we started the podcast. We want people to feel more comfortable asking questions about property and to understand the answers without needing a dictionary beside them.
Shannon brought honesty, curiosity and plenty of laughs. Keith’s property-price guessing record also came under scrutiny, as you would expect. Whether you are renting happily, thinking about buying someday or already looking at listings, there is something in this conversation for you.
